(The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain)(1884)과 톰 소여의 모험(The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain)(1876)이지만, 장편소설 외에도 수많은 단편 소설(Short stories)을 발표하였을 뿐 아니라 다양한 분야의 논픽션((Nonfictions)과 여섯 편의 기행문학(Travelogue), 연설문(Mark Twain's Speeches), 사설(Editorial Wild Oats) 등 장르를 가리지 않고 왕성하게 활동하였습니다. (Chapters from My Autobiography & Mark Twain's Burlesque Autobiography), 어록(Quotes and Images From The Works of Mark Twain), B Ours is a noble old house, and stretches a long way back into antiquity. The earliest ancestor the Twains have any record of was a friend of the family by the name of Higgins. This was in the eleventh century, when our people were living in Aberdeen, county of Cork, England. Why it is that our long line has ever since borne the maternal name (except when one of them now and then took a playful refuge in an alias to avert foolishness), instead of Higgins, is a mystery which none of us has ever felt much desire to stir. It is a kind of vague, pretty romance, and we leave it alone. All the old families do that way. Augustus Twain, seems to have made something of a stir about the year 1160. He was as full of fun as he could be, and used to take his old sabre and sharpen it up, and get in a convenient place on a dark night, and stick it through people as they went by, to see them jump. He was a born humorist. But he got to going too far with it; and the first time he was found stripping one of these parties, the authorities removed one end of him, and put it up on a nice high place on Temple Bar, where it could contemplate the people and have a good time. He never liked any situation so much or stuck to it so long. BURLESQUE AUTOBIOGRAPHY. (BURLESQUE AUTOBIOGRAPHY). Six days after the occurrences related in the above chapter, the brilliant capital of the Duchy of Brandenburgh was resplendent with military pageantry, and noisy with the rejoicings of loyal multitudes; for Conrad, the young heir to the crown, was come. The old Duke's heart was full of happiness, for Conrad's handsome person and graceful bearing had won his love at once. The great halls of the palace were thronged with nobles, who welcomed Conrad bravely; and so bright and happy did all things seem, that he felt his fears and sorrows passing away and giving place to a comforting contentment. CHAPTER II. FESTIVITY AND TEARS. (CHAPTER II. FESTIVITY AND TEARS). The trial was at hand. All the great lords and barons of Brandenburgh were assembled in the Hall of Justice in the ducal palace. No space was left unoccupied where there was room for a spectator to stand or sit. Conrad, clad in purple and ermine, sat in the premier's chair, and on either side sat the great judges of the realm. The old Duke had sternly commanded that the trial of his daughter should proceed, without favor, and then had taken to his bed broken-hearted. His days were numbered. Poor Conrad had begged, as for his very life, that he might be spared the misery of sitting in judgment upon his cousin's crime, but it did not avail. CHAPTER V. THE FRIGHTFUL CATASTROPHE. 무서운 재앙(CHAPTER V. THE FRIGHTFUL CATASTROPHE). (The Father of American literature)(1835~1910) 01-1.
