▶ 빌어먹을 것(요물) 1893(The Damned Thing by Ambrose Bierce)은 인간 본성에 대한 냉소적인 태도로 쓰라린 비어스(Bitter Bierce)라고 불린 19세기 미국 작가 앰브로즈 비어스(Ambrose Bierce, 1842~1914?) (Tales of Soldiers and Civilians by Ambrose Bierce, 1891) 혹은 인생의 한가운데(The Damned Thing 1898, From "In the Midst of Life")에 수록된 바 있습니다. (The Clothing of Ghosts by Ambrose Bierce, 1902)을 발표할 당시 초자연적인 존재에 대한 관심을 다음과 같이 표현한 바 있습니다. (The materialized spook appealing to our senses for recognition of his ghostly character must authenticate himself otherwise than by familiar and remembered habiliments. He must be credentialed by nudity—and that regardless of temperature or who may happen to be present.) ▶ 비어스가 51세(1893년)의 나이로 발표한 빌어먹을 것(요물) 1893(The Damned Thing by Ambrose Bierce)은 비어스 특유의 갑작스러운 전개(An Abrupt Beginning), 어두컴컴한 이미지(Dark Imagery), 시간에 대한 모호성(Vague References To Time), 독자에게 불친절한 설명(Limited Descriptions), 현실적으로 불가능한 사건(Impossible Events), 그리고 참전용사로써 반복적으로 소재로 삼은 전쟁(The Theme Of War) 등의 특징을 뚜렷하게 보여주는 작품으로 그의 개성과 매력을 탐구하는 독자에게 추천합니다. ▶ The man with the book was not reading aloud, and no one spoke; all seemed to be waiting for something to occur; the dead man only was without expectation. From the blank darkness outside came in, through the aperture that served for a window, all the ever unfamiliar noises of night in the wilderness—the long, nameless note of a distant coyote; the stilly pulsing thrill of tireless insects in trees; strange cries of night birds, so different from those of the birds of day; the drone of great blundering beetles, and all that mysterious chorus of small sounds that seem always to have been but half heard when they have suddenly ceased, as if conscious of an indiscretion. ▶ "All this must have occurred within a few seconds, yet in that time Morgan assumed all the postures of a determined wrestler vanquished by superior weight and strength. I saw nothing but him, and him not always distinctly. During the entire incident his shouts and curses were heard, as if through an enveloping uproar of such sounds of rage and fury as I had never heard from the throat of man or brute! ▶ The coroner rose from his seat and stood beside the dead man. Lifting an edge of the sheet he pulled it away, exposing the entire body, altogether naked and showing in the candle light a clay-like yellow. It had, however, broad maculations of bluish-black, obviously caused by extravasated blood from contusions. The chest and sides looked as if they had been beaten with a bludgeon. There were dreadful lacerations; the skin was torn in strips and shreds... "Gentlemen," the coroner said, "we have no more evidence, I think. Your duty has been already explained to you; if there is nothing you wish to ask you may go outside and consider your verdict.“ ▷ 검시관은 자리에서 일어나 죽은 사람 옆에 섰습니다.
