B ▶ PREFACE. All but three of these stories were told to my little niece during our quiet hour before bedtime. They became such favorites with her and her friends that I wrote them down in several small blue books, and called them LULU'S LIBRARY. Having nothing else to offer this year, I have collected them in one volume as a Christmas gift to my boys and girls from their old friend. (Lulu's Library by Louisa May Alcott}(1886~1889) 3부작 제3권은 어린 시절의 기억(Recollections of My Childhood)을 비롯해 크리스마스 터키, 그리고 어떻게 왔는지(A Christmas Turkey, and How It Came), 실버 파티(The Silver Party), 눈먼 종달새(The Blind Lark), 음악과 마카로니(Music and Macaroni), 작은 빨간 지갑(The Little Red Purse), 소피의 비밀(Sophie's Secret), 돌리의 베드스테드(Dolly's Bedstead) 그리고 트루델의 공성전(Trudel's Siege)까지 총 9편의 이야기가 수록되어 있습니다. ▶ RECOLLECTIONS OF MY CHILDHOOD. One of my earliest memories is of playing with books in my father's study,--building towers and bridges of the big dictionaries, looking at pictures, pretending to read, and scribbling on blank pages whenever pen or pencil could be found. Many of these first attempts at authorship still exist; and I often wonder if these childish plays did not influence my after-life, since books have been my greatest comfort, castle-building a never-failing delight, and scribbling a very profitable amusement. ▶ THE BLIND LARK. Baby slept a great deal, for life offered him few pleasures, and like a small philosopher, he wisely tried to forget the troubles which he could not cure; so Lizzie had nothing to do but sing, and try to imagine how the world looked. She had no one to tell her, and the few memories grew dimmer and dimmer each year. She did not know how to work or to play, never having been taught, and mother was too tired at night to do anything but get supper and go to bed. ▶ TRUDEL'S SIEGE. "My servant goes to market and will carry this for you till you are near home. Go, little Trudel; and God bless you for saving us from a great misfortune!" said the lady; and she kissed the happy child and led her to the back door, where stood the little cart with an old man to drive the fat horse, and many baskets to be filled in town.
