This nickname was bestowed upon him on account of his coquettish style of dressing and manners, his slender waist, which looked as if it were laced in a corset, his pale face on which a nascent mustache could hardly be seen, and also on account of the habit he had acquired, in order to express his supreme contempt for persons and things, of using continually the French locution: "Fi! fi donc!" which he pronounced with a slight lisping. ▶ 1870년 혹한의 추위가 닥친 노르망디의 샤또 뒤빌(Chateau d'Uville)에서 지루함을 견디지 못한 군인들은 온갖 만행을 저지릅니다. 살롱에 걸린 초상화에 총알을 박아 넣는가하면, 수많은 수집품으로 가득한 방에서 지뢰를 터트려 버렸습니다!! ▶ Hardly any were left by this time. Not that they had been stolen; the Major, Graf Farlsberg, would not have permitted nor tolerated it; but Mademoiselle Fifi once in a while exploded a mine; and on such occasions all the officers enjoyed themselves thoroughly for five minutes. ▶ 급기야 프로이센 장교들은 자신들의 술자리에 (프랑스) 매춘부를 부르기로 결심합니다! 마차까지 보내 5명의 매춘부를 맞이한 프로이센군의 술자리는 한층 흥겨워졌지만, 프랑스인과 프로이센인의 만남은 그 자체로 파국을 예고할 수 밖에 없는데……. 과연 군인과 매춘부의 만남에서 어떤 일이 벌어질까요?! ▶ For a second he fixed on her his clear eyes, as he used to fix them on the paintings the canvas of which he riddled with revolver shots; then he laughed: "Oh yes! let us speak of it, you beauty! Would we be here if they were brave?"—and he became more and more excited: "We are their masters; France belongs to us!" ▶ 프랑스와 프랑스 여성에 대한 모독적인 발언을 서슴치 않는 피피의 거듭된 망언에 분노한 라헬은 홧김에 그를 디저트 칼(a small silver-bladed dessert knife)로 찌르고, 황급히 도피합니다. 전투가 벌어지지도 않은 마을에서 피피가 사망하자, 프로이센군은 사건을 수습하면서도 동시에 그녀를 찾기 위해 온 마을을 수색합니다. 하지만 그녀의 행방은 묘연하기만 한데?! ▶ Confused, at first, she did not answer, as she did not, in her excitement, understand fully what he said; then, as soon as the meaning of it dawned on her mind, she shouted at him indignantly and vehemently: "I, I, I am not a woman! I am a prostitute! and that is all a Prussian deserves!" ▶ 한편 프러시아군이 마을을 점령한 후 교회의 종은 울리지 않았습니다. 이는 신부와 마을주민들이 그들에게 저항하는 유일한 수단이자 마지막 남은 자존심이였죠! 프러시아 군에게만큼은 신의 축복을 나누지 않겠다는 뜻이였을까요? ▶ Since the arrival of the Germans, the Church bell had not rung. It was in fact the only resistance with which the invaders met in that neighborhood, the resistance of the bell-tower. The Curate had not refused to receive and feed Prussian soldiers; he had even, on several occasions, accepted to drink a bottle of beer or claret with the enemy Commander, who often used him as a benevolent intermediary. But it was useless to ask him for a single ring of his bell; he would rather have faced a firing squad. That was his way of protesting against invasion, a peaceful protest, the protest of silence, the only one, said he, that became a priest, a man of peace and not of blood.
