▶ 에드거 앨런 포의 적사병의 가면극(The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe)(1842)은 1842년 그래햄 매거진(Graham's Magazine) 5월호에 최초로 공개된 미국 작가 에드거 앨런 포(Edgar Allan Poe)(1809~1849)의 단편 소설입니다. 작품에는 감염되자마자 30분 만에 사망하는 정체불명의 전염병(plague), 일명 적사병(Red Death)을 피해 오직 천 명의 국민만을 추려 수도원(the abbey)으로 스스로 고립된 프로스페로 왕자(Prince Prospero)가 등장합니다. 그가 거주하는 수도원에는 각기 다른 콘셉트로 꾸며진 7개의 방이 있으며, 성 밖에서 국민들이 숨을 거두고 있을 때 화려한 음악과 함께 매일같이 가장무도회(a masquerade ball)를 개최하는 모습은 그 자체로 으스스합니다……. 과연 포는 프로스페로 왕자와 그의 일행들에게 영원히 행복한 삶을 선사할까요? 글쎄요, 그렇진 않을 것 같네요……. 테마여행신문 TTN Korea 영어고전(English Classics)과 함께 어제도, 오늘도, 내일도 멋진 문학여행을! When his dominions were half depopulated, he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and light-hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys. This was an extensive and magnificent structure, the creation of the prince’s own eccentric yet august taste. A strong and lofty wall girdled it in. This wall had gates of iron. "적사병"이 없었습니다.▶ 적사병(Red Death)이 뭐야?! : 적사병(Red Death)은 적사병의 가면극(1842)에서 감염되자마자 30분 만에 사망하는 정체불명의 전염병(plague)을 일컫는 표현입니다만, 실제로 존재하는 질병은 아닙니다. 우리에게 친숙한 흑사병(黑死病, Black Death)을 살짝 변형한 것으로 추정됩니다. 질병의 이름 자체가 ‘죽음(Death)’을 뜻한다는 것은 그 자체로 스포일러가 되는데, 이 때문에 가장무도회에 등장하는 적사병(Red Death)에 대한 다양한 해석이 가능하지요. 실체 없이 붉은 가면을 쓴 그의 정체는 과연 무엇일까요?!▶ The “Red Death” had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal—the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men. And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of half an hour.▷ "적사병"은 오랫동안 이 나라를 황폐화시켰습니다. 어떤 역병도 그렇게 치명적이거나 끔찍한 적이 없었습니다. 피는 그것의 아바타이자 그것의 도장, 즉 피의 붉은색과 공포였습니다. 심한 통증과 갑작스러운 현기증, 그리고 모공에서 출혈이 심하고 용출이 있었습니다. 시신과 특히 피해자의 얼굴에 묻은 주홍색 얼룩은 그를 원조와 동료들의 동정으로부터 격리시킨 해충 금지령이었습니다. 그리고 모든 발작, 병의 진행과 종식은 단 30분이었습니다.▶ 적사병을 피해 달아났으나, 역설적으로 스스로를 수도원에 가둔 프로스페로 왕자(Prince Prospero)는 어리석은 인간에 대한 비유일 것입니다. 프로스페로이 익숙하신 분이 계시다면, 윌리엄 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare)(1564~1616)의 템페스트(The Tempest)(1610)를 떠올리실 것입니다. 템페스트의 프로스페로는 동생 안토니오에게 추방당한 밀라노의 공작으로, 폭풍으로 인해 표류한 안토니오에게 복수한 후 다시 나폴리로 금의환향하는 인물입니다. 해피엔딩을 맞은 셰익스피어의 템페스트와 달리 적사병의 가면극(1842)의 프로스페로에겐 편안한 죽음이 허락되지 않았습니다. ▶ And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay. And the flames of the tripods expired.
