On that account he looks upon me, not merely as Latitudinarian, but as a perfect Atheist, and a faithful old manservant of ours, who is much attached to me, and who accidentally saw my father's will, told me in confidence that he had left all his property to the Jesuits. I think this is highly suspicious, and I fear that the priests have been maligning me to my father. Until less than a year ago, we used to live very quietly and happily together, but ever since he has had so much to do with the clergy, our domestic peace and happiness are at an end.” ▶ 아들의 제보를 접수한 경찰서장(the office of the head of the police)은 난감하기만 합니다. 자신의 재산에 대한 처분권은 어디까지나 아버지에게 있으며, 아직 유언장이 집행된 것도 아니기 때문이지요. ▶ "What you have told me," the official replied, "is as likely as it is regrettable, but I fail to see how I can interfere in the matter. Your father is in the full possession of all his mental faculties, and can dispose of all his property exactly as he pleases. I also think that your protest is premature; you must wait until his will can legally take effect, and then you can invoke the aid of justice; I am sorry to say that I can do nothing for you.” ▶ 그러나 아들은 유언장이 집필되는 과정에서 예수회의 교묘한 속임수가 있었다고 주장했습니다. 이미 사망한 어머니의 목소리를 빌어, 전 재산을 교회에 기부하지 않으면 안된다는 비윤리적인 협박이 있었다는 것!! ▶ "When I remonstrated with him, yesterday evening, he referred to my dead mother, and at last assured me, in a voice of the deepest conviction, that she had frequently appeared to him, and had threatened him with all the torments of the damned, if he did not disinherit his son, who had fallen away from God, and leave all his property to the Church. Now I do not believe in ghosts.” ▶ 경찰서장은 구체적인 증거가 없는데다가, 종교계에 대한 수사가 부담스러웠기에 일단 적당히 아들을 돌려보냈습니다. 그러나, 한달 후 포기하지 않은 아들은 몇 가지 결정적인 정보와 함께 다시 경찰서를 방문하는데……. ▶ When it was over, the Jesuit took the book of the Gospels and the holy water sprinkler, and went slowly out of the chapel, while the old man followed him, with the holy water basin in one hand and a taper in the other. Then the police director left his hiding place, and stooping down, so as not to be seen, he crept to the chapel window, where he cowered down carefully, and the young man followed his example. They were now looking straight on his mother's grave. ▶ 결정적인 제보에 힘입어, 무거운 엉덩이를 뗀 경찰서장은 어머니의 묘지를 함께 방문한 아버지와 예수회 신부의 뒤를 은밀하게 쫓습니다. 그리고 그들은 묘지지기가 사기극에 동참했다는 것을 현장에서 적발해 내는데!! ▶ "He must deposit his will with the Judicial Authorities, as his last will and testament, and drive the reprobate out of his house.” ▶ 19세기의 대중들에게도 수사권 밖에 존재하는 종교계의 문제점에 대해 비판의식이 있었고, 이에 작가 모파상이 동조하여 종교계를 풍자하는 단편을 집필하였을 것입니다. 안타깝게도 (모파상의 작품에서조차!!) 사기극의 주범인 예수회 신부에 대한 처벌은 쉽지 않았습니다만, 아버지와 아들은 극적으로 화해할 수 있었답니다. ▶ The only valuable result of the amusing ghost story was, that it brought about a reconciliation between father and son, and the former, as a matter of fact, felt such deep respect for priests and their ghosts in consequence of the apparition, that a short time after his wife had left purgatory for the last time, in order to talk with him, he turned Protestant.
