The two dialogues which are translated in the second appendix are not mentioned by Aristotle, or by any early authority, and have no claim to be ascribed to Plato. They are examples of Platonic dialogues to be assigned probably to the second or third generation after Plato, when his writings were well known at Athens and Alexandria. They exhibit considerable originality, and are remarkable for containing several thoughts of the sort which we suppose to be modern rather than ancient, and which therefore have a peculiar interest for us. 그것들은 상당한 독창성을 보여주며, 우리가 고대라기보다 현대적이라고 가정하고 따라서 우리에게 특별한 관심을 갖는 종류의 몇 가지 생각을 포함하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만합니다.▶ The Second Alcibiades shows that the difficulties about prayer which have perplexed Christian theologians were not unknown among the followers of Plato. The Eryxias was doubted by the ancients themselves: yet it may claim the distinction of being, among all Greek or Roman writings, the one which anticipates in the most striking manner the modern science of political economy and gives an abstract form to some of its principal doctrines.▷ 두 번째 알키비아데스(The Second Alcibiades)는 기독교 신학자들을 당혹스럽게 했던 기도에 대한 어려움들이 플라톤의 추종자들 사이에서 알려지지 않았다는 것을 보여줍니다. 고대인들은 에릭시아스를 의심했지만, 모든 그리스 또는 로마의 저술 중에서 정치 경제학의 현대 과학을 가장 눈에 띄는 방식으로 예측하고 주요 교리 중 일부에 추상적인 형태를 부여하는 것의 구별을 주장할 수 있습니다.▶ SOCRATES: And are not the healthy richer than the sick, since health is a possession more valuable than riches to the sick? Surely there is no one who would not prefer to be poor and well, rather than to have all the King of Persia's wealth and to be ill. And this proves that men set health above wealth, else they would never choose the one in preference to the other.▷ 소크라테스: 건강한 사람이 병든 사람보다 더 부유하지 않습니까? 그렇지 않으면 그들은 결코 다른 것보다 우선적으로 하나를 선택하지 않을 것입니다.▶ Eryxias looked askance, as if he had received some unfair treatment, and said, I believe, Socrates, that if you were forced to speak the truth, you would declare that you were richer than Callias the son of Hipponicus. And yet, although you claimed to be wiser about things of real importance, you would not any the more be richer than he.▷ 에릭시아스는 부당한 대우를 받은 듯 의아한 표정을 지으며 “소크라테스, 당신이 진실을 말하도록 강요받는다면 당신은 히포니쿠스의 아들 칼리아스보다 더 부자라고 선언할 것입니다. 그러나 비록 당신이 정말로 중요한 일에 대해 더 현명하다고 주장하더라도 당신은 그보다 더 부자가 될 수 없습니다.▶ SOCRATES: Clearly we have not yet answered the question, What is wealth? That wealth must be useful, to be wealth at all,—thus much is acknowledged by every one. But what particular thing is wealth, if not all things? Let us pursue the argument in another way; and then we may perhaps find what we are seeking. What is the use of wealth, and for what purpose has the possession of riches been invented,—in the sense, I mean, in which drugs have been discovered for the cure of disease? Perhaps in this way we may throw some light on the question.
