Synopsis

1904(How He Lied to Her Husband by George Bernard Shaw)는 ‘셰익스피어 이후 최고의 극작가(The Greatest Playwright after Shakespeare)’로 추앙받는 19세기 영국 극작가 조지 버나드 쇼(George Bernard Shaw, 1856~1950)가 풋풋한 청년 시절(1879~1883)을 지나 한층 원숙한 나이(48세)에 집필한 코미디 단막극(One-Act Comedy Play)입니다. (Five Novels Early in His Career)을 비롯해 정치, 드라마 비평(Politics, Drama Criticism) 등 다양한 분야의 글을 왕성하게 집필한 바 있습니다. 1904(How He Lied to Her Husband by George Bernard Shaw)의 공통점은?! 1904(How He Lied to Her Husband by George Bernard Shaw)이란 단막 구성의 코미디 작품(One-act comedy play)을 집필하였으니, 함께 읽어보시면 더욱 좋습니다. 1904(How He Lied to Her Husband by George Bernard Shaw)는 코미디 단막극(One-Act Comedy Play)이니만큼 등장인물도 단 세 명 뿐인 단출한 구성입니다. ▶ PREFACE. Like many other works of mine, this playlet is a piece d'occasion. In 1905 it happened that Mr Arnold Daly, who was then playing the part of Napoleon in The Man of Destiny in New York, found that whilst the play was too long to take a secondary place in the evening's performance, it was too short to suffice by itself. I therefore took advantage of four days continuous rain during a holiday in the north of Scotland to write How He Lied To Her Husband for Mr Daly. In his hands, it served its turn very effectively. 1895(The Man of Destiny by George Bernard Shaw)에서 나폴레옹 역을 맡았던 아놀드 댈리(Arnold Daly)는 저녁 공연에서 2차 자리를 차지하기에는 연극이 너무 길지만 충분하지 않기에는 너무 짧다는 사실을 발견했습니다. ▶ As she is dressed for the theatre; has spoilt, petted ways; and wears many diamonds, she has an air of being a young and beautiful woman; but as a matter of hard fact, she is, dress and pretensions apart, a very ordinary South Kensington female of about 37, hopelessly inferior in physical and spiritual distinction to the beautiful youth, who hastily puts down the mirror as she enters. ▶ HE. I never thought of doing so, dearest: I know that these trivialities are nothing to you. What was I saying—oh yes. Instead of coming back here from the theatre, you will come with me to my home—now and henceforth our home—and in due course of time, when you are divorced, we shall go through whatever idle legal ceremony you may desire. I attach no importance to the law: my love was not created in me by the law, nor can it be bound or loosed by it. That is simple enough, and sweet enough, is it not? [He takes the flower from the table]. Here are flowers for you: I have the tickets: we will ask your husband to lend us the carriage to show that there is no malice, no grudge, between us. Come! ▷ 남자(HE). ▶ HE. All this alarm is needless, dearest. Believe me, nothing will happen. Your husband knows that I am capable of defending myself. Under such circumstances nothing ever does happen. And of course I shall do nothing. The man who once loved you is sacred to me. ▷ 남자(HE).
