The championship game. Down by one, bottom of the final inning. I went down against the Depth Charge without even grazing the ball with my bat. From that day on, my world stopped.
A pitch that ignores the rules. No one knew the answer to how to hit it. Still, I didn't give up. Cricket. Golf. I abandoned baseball's conventional wisdom and sought answers in other sports. Scooping the bat up from just above the dirt—the Rising Phoenix. Even as my forearms screamed in protest, I repeated two thousand practice swings.
Then came the rematch. Bottom of the seventh, two outs. I found her "tell."
The movement of her thumb. The dip of her shoulder. That was the signature of the Depth Charge. The ball plummeted. I dropped low. And then—
I grazed it. A single dribbler. An out. I lost. But it was different from that day. Her demon pitch was no longer absolute.
This is the record of a helpless girl who clawed her way back and found "a way to survive."
