People do not immediately experience eternal peace or infinite torment in hell after they die. They are first left alone with their thoughts. And as if that weren't bad enough, sometimes a phenomenon occurs that makes the soul special, and the respective ruler of the afterlife gets to decide what happens to it. These souls are called Individuals. Syl is one such Individual in Hell.
